Executive summary of key ideas, context, methods etc.: The role of education in development processes has been discussed for decades. Education contributes to social and democratic development and may also lay the ground for sustainable economic development generally. However, the provision of good quality education depends to a large extent upon the quality of teachers. The dependency upon teachers is maybe even greater in developing countries than in the developed world, due to widespread illiteracy among parents (Burke, 1999). There is firm evidence that professional role of teacher do make a difference in pupil achievement. The decision regarding the future role of the teacher as technician or professional is perhaps the most important one to be made in education today. In fact, the professional vision of teaching sets broader parameters for the total development of teachers and teaching. The principal objective of this project is to get a better understanding of the major challenges, which confront basic education or formal schooling in Bangladesh. Foremost among these challenges are the question of teacher and relationships between the State and professionalization of teaching, as well as institutional tradition on the one side, and how the socio-political order, on the other, have influenced the teaching profession to have a mature form and ensure quality primary education. At the end, this project hopes to contribute with some valid interpretation of the crucial role of schoolteacher for the improvement of quality education and school management as well as what policies can forward such a role. The theory of professionalism would be used as a guideline to explain professionalization of schoolteachers
