Executive summary of key ideas, context, methods etc.: This study will review the strategies used in HIV/AIDS education, explore the cultural aspects of HIV/AIDS and give some suggestions on alternative strategies from an international perspective.
The main objectives of the study are:
  • To analyse the approaches to HIV/AIDS education adopted by the Ministry of Education for their effectiveness and relevance.
  • To assess the impact of the approaches on pupils knowledge and understanding.
  • To compare the strategies adopted with those of other countries and education systems.
  • To analyse the influence of culture on HIV/AIDS education.
  • To come up with possible recommendations on more effective ways and or strategies ensuring that the HIV/AIDS message and or health message is got across to pupils at an early age effectively.

The project will take 3 (three years) to complete. There will be field work conducted in Zambia each year. In the second year of the study, field work will also be conducted in Uganda to assess reasons for the successs of HIV/AIDS education programmes in that country. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods will be used. It will include conducting interviews, document analysis and class room observations. Theories of learning, culture, management and change will guide this study.
