| Institution: | Institute of Graduate Students, University Sains, Malaysia |
| Name of researcher/evaluator: | Ali Abdalah Warsame |
| Year started: | 2001 |
| Planned year of completion: | 2004 |
| Executive summary of key ideas, context, methods etc.: | This study is being designed around the following
aims: - To explore quality improvement possibilities for the current Koranic school system without damaging the basic ethos, unique character and self-sustaining nature of this indigenous institution. - To find out ways to ensure that the Koranic education and formal education could become truly complementary and not competitive systems. - To find out ways to strengthen the effectiveness of the Koranic schools for promoting better early childcare. - To design a theory on how one could facilitate a diversified learning system where the main goal is introducing basic mathematics, health education, literacy (reading and writing in mother tongue), and life skills education of quality with equivalence to primary formal education. Fieldwork: There will be fieldwork conducted in Somalia. Research Methodology: A major concern in capacity building of indigenous Koranic institutions in Somalia involves the examination of a wide range of issues, which occur in different settings. Therefore, any attempt toward the capacity building of this institution, has to be made to capture the details of these occurrences in their context, which makes this study holistic. The research strategy that will be used in this research is participative problem solving research, where the different stakeholders of the Koranic schools/institutions (teachers, parents, and politicians) all have to be incorporated. The adoption of the participation problem solving research does not exclude the appropriate use of other strategies for optimum performance. |
