science, mathematics education in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia,
Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia, Uganda and Norway. |

| Executive summary of key ideas, context, methods etc.: |
The main objective is to increase the research capacity in
mathematics education in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. This will be
done by training 8 students for a PhD in mathematics education at the
University of the Western Cape. It is further an objective of the programme to
build a network in mathematics education in the same area. The requirement for
being recruited to the programme, besides the academic qualifications, are as
follows: - the students from the South should be drawn primarily from the black
community - the students should be engaged in educational work at tertiary
level and governmental departments - The project should be open for Norwegian
