The main objective is to increase the research capacity in science, mathematics education in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia, Uganda and Norway.
This will be done by training 22 students for a PhD in mathematics education at the University of the Western Cape.
It is further an objective of the programme to build a network for mathematics education in the same area.
The requirement for being recruited to the programme, besides the academic qualifications, are as follows: - the students from the South should be drawn primarily from the black community - the students should be engaged in educational work at tertiary level and governmental departments.
The project should be open for Norwegian students to participate Implementation.
The GRASSMATE project is a sandwich programme. The students meets for a two-week seminar twice a year, located in one of the participating countries.
