Executive summary of key ideas, context, methods etc.:

The general objectives are · developing some basic monolingual dictionaries for the indigenous languages of Zimbabwe:

  • creating corpora of natural language for the indigenous languages of Zimbabwe as a basis for lexicographical work and also other linguistic and literary research uses
  • formal competence building through 2 Ph.D.s on lexicography (which is required in order to secure the stability of the ALLEX project and to promote institutionalization of lexicography at the UZ)
  • training staff and students in monolingual lexicography, relevant computational language analysis, and project planning for lexicography
  • furthering North-South and South-South cooperation within the field of lexicography, with a view to professional independence at UZ and cooperation on equal terms
  • testing out models for monolingual lexicography which are in use at UiO on languages with a different structure and a different socio-linguistic setting
  • testing out software models for lexicography and linguistics which are in use at GU and UiO on languages with a different structure and a different socio-linguistic setting
