| Executive summary of key ideas, context, methods etc.: | In the Palestinian areas West Bank and Gaza formation of the
nation is a continuous process. Of vital importance is education, which is
regarded a cornerstone in the new society. The Palestinian teachers are in a
key position in this transformation. Their role and competence are most
important in building up an independent and viable Palestinian state. Years of
occupation have seriously damaged the education. The research topic is related
to challenges and aims in development of the first Palestinian education. An
approach is possibilities foreign countries could have in supporting the
construction of an independent education that promotes national cohesion and
international competitiveness. My point of departure is Norwegian and Japanese
aid to the Palestinian educational sector.
The analytical framework is theoretical analysis of teachers' work, educational systems and changing school environment in modern societies and possibilities and limitations in educational aid. Data are collected through field studies and interviews with representatives of donor agencies such as JICA, NORAD and multinational organisations, national, regional and local authorities and teachers. The study is in close co-operation with the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Palestinian educational institutions. |
